A lightsaber or dark saber embodies the wielder’s strength and courage. It serves as a conduit to the Force. 

Ever since its first appearance in the second series of The Clone Wars, the darksaber has gained tremendous popularity and attention of people. 

The darksaber is the most sought-after weapon in the Star Wars Universe. The first to ever hold the Darksaber was Tarre Vizsla, who created it. Tarre Vizsla was the only Mandalorian accepted as a Jedi during the Old Republic era. 

He built an extremely unique-looking pitch-dark blade, considered the most powerful Star Wars darksaber. After his death, the saber was kept in the Jedi temple. But ever wonder who else from the warrior wielded the saber?

Darksaber’s History

It was said that the ruler of Mandalorian would be someone who would defeat the current wielder of the weapon. 

However, many warriors have had the chance to possess the saber until they lost to others. 

Pre Vizsla:- 

When House Vizsla stole the darksaber from their ancestors’ possession, Pre Vizsla owned the darksaber during the Clone War. 

Vizsla lost guardianship of the weapon during a war with Maul and claimed the leadership of Darth Watch.

Darth Maul:- 

During the duel war between Pre Vizsla and Darth Maul, Maul won against him and possessed the darksaber. After that, he took control of a Mandalorian group called Darth Watch.  

Later, Maul was defeated by his former mentor, Darth Sidious, during a fierce battle. After losing the possession, he was imprisoned in Spire. 

Sabine Wren:-

A Mandalorian weapon master and part of the rebel group found the dark saber and took possession of it. 

Earlier, Sabine felt unworthy of wielding the powerful weapon. Mandalorian leaders Fenn Reu and Hera Syndulla encouraged Sabine to master the darksaber. She realized that she could use the power of the saber to unit her people. 

Feeling worthy of wielding the weapon, Sabine decided to train herself and moved to a planet, Atollon, with Kanan and Ezra. 

Bo-Katan Kryze:-

During a mission to rescue her father, Sabine met Katan and offered the sword. Sabine considered her to be the right person to hand over the weapon. Bo-Katan felt unworthy of wielding the saber and denied keeping it. 

Sabine convinced her by saying that other clans supported her. Even the Force wants her to be the sword’s wielder. That’s why it has been brought to her. She finally accepts the sword to honor the clan and Mandalore.

Moff Gideon:-

Bo-Katan surrendered the sword in front of Gideon as she wanted to stop the Empire from purging Mandalore. Then, Moff Gideon held the darksaber. However, he lost the weapon during a duel with Din Djarin.

Din Djarin:-

Din Djarin won the saber in a battle while rescuing Grogu from Gideon. Initially, he struggled with the saber and slashed his own thigh during a war. The Armorer explained the past of the weapon to him and promised to train him.

Din Djarin had several duels to maintain the possession of the weapon. He fought with Paz Vizsla, Scorpenek droids, and Almites. 

Believing Kryze to be the rightful owner of the powerful darksaber as she saved him and defeated Axe Woves, Djarin offered her to accept the ownership. 

Features of The Darksaber

Indeed, the darksaber was the most potent blade that revolved around many wielders’ hands. 

Let’s learn what features the traditional-looking blade had that made it special. 

• Appearance of The Blade:- 

The darksaber was black-bladed, shorter than most lightsabers, and appeared like a traditional sword. It had an angular pommel, hand guard, and slit-shaped blade emitter made of Mandalorian iron. 

• The Screech Sound

A high-pitched sound comes out of the black saber when ignited. Unlike lightsabers that sound like a hum, the darksaber sounded like a screech. 

• A Conduit to The Force:- 

The darksaber had a crystal that connected the Force to the wielders. The wielders’ thoughts and actions played a significant role in deciding the blade’s power. When the wielder’s emotional state elevates, the saber makes an electrical effect, able to connect on a subconscious level.

The darksaber was capable of heating to a point until it turned red. However, unlike typical lightsabers, they can never penetrate the pure basket.

1. “Field of Dreams” (1989)

Rated PG, this classic stars Kevin Costner as an Iowa farmer who hears a mysterious voice telling him to turn his corn crop into a baseball diamond.  When he does, two deceased baseball legends make appearances and lead Costner’s character down a path of discovery about the ghosts from the past and the living from the present.

2. “Major League” (1989)

Rated PG-13 for some vulgar language, “Major League” tells the story of a Cleveland Indians team that gets a new lease on life when it is purchased by Rachel Phelps – played by Margaret Whitton – the owner of a failing amusement park.  The movie was written and directed by David S Ward, who also wrote “The Sting.” The film’s title refers to the Major League Baseball rule that states a player drafted by one Major League team cannot be traded to another until he accumulates at least three years of service time in the Majors.

3. “A League of Their Own” (1992)

In this Tom Hanks/Geena Davis-led film, we see two sisters – played by Davis and Rosie O’Donnell – take on their male counterparts as they form the first professional women’s baseball league after World War II.  Directed by Penny Marshall, who also directed “Big,” and produced and co-written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel, who also wrote “1941.” The cast of this one is full of serious star power: Hanks, Davis, O’Donnell, and Madonna.  And if that isn’t enough to make you watch this film, maybe the story will be.  During World War II, as many major league baseball players went off to serve in the military (or were simply drafted), teams all over Major League Baseball suffered from a lack of talent.  The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) was created to fill that void and entertain fans who had come to expect their weekly baseball fix.  The result: a highly competitive league filled with some of the best female baseball players in the country.

4) Angels in the Outfield (1994, PG) 

Another classic family film, this version of “Angels in the Outfield,” tells a heartwarming story about a young boy who summons angels from above to help his baseball team become league champions.  Although it was released as a remake of 1993’s movie by the same name starring Danny Glover from 1991, this 1994 production stars Christopher Lloyd and native New Yorker Tony Danza as an angel-in-training who falls for Julie (Kirsten Dunst), a little girl whose father is coaching the unlucky team. 

5. 42 (2013, PG-13) 

Starring Chadwick Boseman as Jackie Robinson and Harrison Ford as the Brooklyn Dodgers’ manager, this film is an inspiring true story about how Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier.  The first black player in modern major league baseball, Robinson endured racism throughout his career but achieved success with grace and dignity.  Paired with footage from MLB games of the era, “42” captures a critical moment in American history while celebrating one of baseball’s greatest heroes. 

6) Moneyball (2011, PG-13) 

Full of both humor and drama, this critically acclaimed movie tells a real-life story of how Billy Beane (Brad Pitt), general manager for Oakland Athletics, changed the game of baseball when he relied on metrics rather than traditional scouting methods.  Through Beane’s eyes, “Moneyball” shows how one man can make a difference in this world.

7) The Pride of the Yankees (1942, NR) 

Starring Gary Cooper, who also directed the film himself, “The Pride of the Yankees” tells the true story of Lou Gehrig, who broke records and made an impact on baseball like no other player before him.  After becoming ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Gehrig gave his famous farewell speech at Yankee Stadium in 1939 that brought tears to fans’ eyes worldwide.  

8. Million Dollar Arm (2014, PG) 

Inspired by true events, this Disney film tells the story of J.B. Bernstein, an agent who travels to India in hopes of finding the next big baseball star.  When he finds two young cricket players with unique pitching styles, he begins working with them on their journey to become professional pitchers in the MLB.  With a supporting cast including Jon Hamm and Alan Arkin, “Million Dollar Arm” is sure to grab fans’ attention from its start until its heartwarming end.

9. The Rookie (2002, PG) 

If you’re looking for a feel-good movie about pursuing one’s dreams, “The Rookie” is the perfect film.  Starring Dennis Quaid as Jim Morris, this film tells the story of how he defied the odds at age 35 to become a professional pitcher in the MLB.  Although it was rather unsuccessful at the box office, baseball fans immensely enjoyed this uplifting hit and maybe inspired by Morris’ true story.

10. For the Love of The Game (1999, PG-13) 

As Kevin Costner’s final onscreen performance, “For The Love Of The Game” is a classic sports film with an all-star cast.  With baseball as the backdrop of this true story, it tells about Billy Chapel (Costner) trying to overcome major career-altering injuries while pitching his last game for the Detroit Tigers.  Although many fans question what happened after the movie ends, they can’t help but enjoy watching this 90s favorite on repeat!

Conclusion:

We cannot separate movies from real life.  Movies make it possible for us to witness the life and greatness of others even after their moments of glory have passed.

Viewed through distorted and psychedelic eyes, this movie features everything from awry sounds to hallucinatory images that are bound to warp your mind. The film portraits Vegas as the city full of mindless gamblers, life’s losers, and hidden thrill-seekers. Once the film ends, you will either want to book a flight straight to the city or you will never want to visit Vegas in your lifetime.

2. Casino (1995)

The movie is mainly shot at the Riviera casino and is a true-life story marketed as a loose sequel to the amazing Goodfellas. The Casino was directed by Martin Scorsese and features Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci at their brutal best. In the movie, Scorsese portraited a corrupt and decadent Vegas of the ’70s and his most poignant shot of the movie is of the old casinos being dynamited and replaced those casinos with Disney-themed toy castles partnering with America’s baroque peasantry.

3. The Hangover (2009)

The Hangover is easily one of the best Vegas-themed movies of all time. It uses a simple comedy plot to create an amazing movie filled with lots of action-adventure and limitless belly laughs. The movie starred Bradley Cooper at his cool and listless best and tells the story of a bachelor party on the pursuit of an adventure before their forthcoming nuptials. On the trip, things did not go according to their plan resulting in a series of hilarious situations, a roaming tiger and an unfortunate brawl with heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson.

Ocean’s Eleven is undoubtedly one of George Clooney’s best films and is based on a 1960’s original. The movie tells the story of a group of confident tricksters who target a famous casino in the city aiming to break the bank and steal millions of dollars. Add to that a complicated scheme and a romance between Clooney’s character and his ex-wife played by Julia Roberts and the casino owner played by Andy Garcia. The movie also used The Bellagio as one of its locations capturing its beauty and its inherent sense of style.

5. Viva Las Vegas (1964)

Viva Las Vegas features the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley who arrives Vegas to participate in the city’s first Grand Prix but found himself waylaid by Ann-Margret. This 1964 George Sidney directorial is one of Elvis’s memorable movies and probably one of the major reasons why Elvis made Vegas his second home during the final years of his career. Camp and dated by modern standards, the film is made memorable by Elvis’ amazing performance as well as its stunning theme song crooned by Elvis himself. The Strip’s oldest building The Little Church of The West features in the movie’s final scene.

6. Leaving Las Vegas (1995)

While movies set in Vegas are usually fun-filled and light-hearted, Leaving Las Vegas starring Nicholas Cage is the opposite of it. This Mike Figgis directed 1995 drama features Nicholas Cage as an alcoholic intent on drinking himself to death comes and had a long-lasting impact on audiences’ minds. The movie takes a Vegas transient with Nicholas Cage and a Vegas lifer, played by Elisabeth Shue and watches them in a steadily widening cycle of alcoholism, rape and total absorption of the Seven Circles of the Vegas Hell. The Nevada Tourist Authority most likely does not like to watch this movie, but it shows Vegas in a way that all other Vegas miss.

Let us introduce you to two moms, Elle Kamihira and Katie Hyde, along with their collaborator Yulia Ruditskaya, who are bringing one family’s domestic violence experience to the big screen.

Their film, JENNIFER, 42 is the (dramatic!) true story of Jennifer Magnano, a suburban mom of three, and her epic battle to be free from the coercive control and violence of husband and father Scott.

One of the most fascinating things about the film, besides the story itself,  is that it’s voiced by Jennifer’s children but the films is that it’s completely animated.

“Setting the film to animation has this really powerful effect — when you watch the story unfold you see through their eyes, feel their feelings, and you really understand their struggle. Animation makes it less about one family’s story and makes it more universal because the awful reality is that this is many families’ story.”

“While our goal is to demystify what goes on in domestic violence households,” Director Elle Kamihira notes that JENNIFER, 42 “is not a ‘victim’ story. It is, however, a very dramatic, twisty-turny story about a family’s bravery, resilience and resourcefulness in the face of terrible adversity.”

The JENNIFER, 42 team are setting their sights on sparking a national conversation about domestic violence, the nature of coercive control, and aligning with groups who aim to pass laws that will do better for victims of domestic violence.

The filmmakers are in the last 6 days of their Kickstarter Campaign, that has been running all of October in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and they are rallying support nationwide and mobilizing MOTHERS across the country to help them meet their goal. They are asking fellow moms to make a $10 donation and post the hashtag #Moms4Jennifer42 graphic on their favorite social platform to show their support. 

“Jennifer was an ordinary woman living her life and trying to take care of her kids. That’s all we truly want, as mothers, is the safety and well being of our children,” says Elle.  Katie adds, “It’s a powerful idea, to us, that we could send out this call to action to mothers. How amazing would it be, if this film was funded with ten dollar donations from thousands of mothers who care about the safety and well-being of other moms who are struggling with abuse?”

Hotel Transylvania 3 is available on Blu-ray, DVD & Digital October 9

That’s right! Drac, Mavis, and the rest of the crew is bringing more spooky fun. And just in time for your Halloween family movie night! This time around, they are off on a monstrous summer vacation, full of hilarious fun. The movie takes place on a luxury monster cruise ship. Of course,  our favorite monster family is having a great time relaxing together. At least things start out that way. I think we all know that when Drac is around, things never quite end up how we expect them to.

Dress up as Dracula for Halloween and then take Mavis along when you go trick or treating!

Do you remember the Strawberry Shortcake dolls of our youth? I know I do! I am the middle child, and I have two sisters. When we were growing up, all three of us were OBSESSED with Strawberry Shortcake. It was better than Rainbow Brite and Rose Petal put together, and probably even cooler than the Glo-Worms or the Lotsa Legs.

When my son was younger, he was obsessed with Elmo and Sesame Street. We had about a billion episodes on our DVR, but we always had to wait to record the episode to have it to watch. The beauty of WildBrain is that it gives age-appropriate educational choices, and they are all right in one place. Kids can watch shows like Caillou, Ellie Explorer, or Cody and have access to all currently available episodes whenever they want. What’s more, new episodes are being added each and every week.

Strawberry Shortcake the Current Top Spot

My daughter loves all things friendship, teamwork, and princess. Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures Girls Show has everything she loves. I imagine it is the same for a lot of girls her age right now, too. The show is fantastic because while the episode may range in length from 34-45 minutes, it is broken up into several mini-episodes. Some tie back together throughout the entire episode, though many stand alone. For little ones, it is the perfect length to hold their attention. Each story is told and wrapped up in around two and a half minutes, which is just the right length to keep little minds entertained and learning without them getting bored. 

Episode Messaging

The episode Yes to the Dress emphasizes teamwork and friendship throughout. The characters support one another and lean on each other for support and help when they need it. It’s a great precedent to set for little ones showing them how to build one another up and support one another. There is a lot of discussion about manners, as well. However there is a distinct point made that maintaining your own good manners is always nice, but trying to enforce other peoples’ good manners makes for an annoying friend.

A Haunting in Berry City is inspiring for little ones to learn the importance of cooperating. In this segment, many of the episodes are focused on problem-solving. In some of them, the characters disagree and bicker and go their own ways. When they start cooperating and using their problem-solving skills, everything starts coming back together for the girls of Berry Bitty City. 

Market Yourself is a testament to self-confidence and assertiveness. Even though the stories inside the episode are short, it is astonishing just how powerful the message is when you know what to look for, and teaching little girls the importance of self-worth from an early age is priceless.

It’s such an amazing experience to be able to share something from my youth with one of my children. The new Strawberry Shortcake animated series is the perfect show to bridge a generational gap. The fact that I already know and love the characters makes my daughter super excited to share and talk about each episode. It opens up a dialogue about some of the important messages for girls being portrayed on the show. It’s an incredible way to start building self-confidence and problem-solving skills in little girls from a very early age. And the fact that it is all found with a few keystrokes on Wildbrain means that it is content that is age-appropriate and educational. It’s just a giant ball of win all around.
