Mentorship programs have a strong track record for success. They keep people accountable. They reduce stress, improve the flow of knowledge between people in a common setting, and boost overall outcomes.

Student mentorship programs can yield these results, but they require careful implementation. Schools must develop systems to ensure that the mentorship takes place regularly and with mutual levels of commitment between participants.

In this article, we take a look at how high schools can guide connections and why it is important to do so.

First, what is mentorship?

Mentorship is just another word for guidance—particularly when it takes place in a specific setting, such as a company, or a school system. The idea is to pair someone who is new to a certain setting, with someone who knows the ropes. The experience is supposed to help people acclimate better during times of adjustment.

An obvious application in the school setting would be to connect freshmen with responsible upperclassmen. Similarly, captains or coaches of extracurricular programs might connect new members with experienced participants in their program.

The problem, of course, is that age does not necessarily indicate wisdom—particularly when it comes to high school students.

Educators might instead put the focus on achievement over seniority. Connect students who have demonstrated strong results with those who are at risk.

Below, we take a look at several challenges high school students face that can be improved by mentorship.

Mental Health Issues Among High School Students

High school students experience pressures and emotions that they may feel uncomfortable discussing with the adults in their lives. True mental health issues should be funnelled toward professionals but peer-level relationships can be a strong secondary form of treatment.

Simply having someone else who understands where you are coming from when times get hard can be healing.

Developing a Healthy System

One of the first issues that school counselors will bump up against when they try to implement a peer mentorship program is supply. Finding a large rost of exceptionally responsible high school students is hard. Convincing them to voluntarily mentor other kids their age will be even harder.

To that end, it will help to have participation incentives for mentors. Extra credit is one potential option. Developing the program in a way that will stand out on a college application is certainly another. Many highly motivated students will jump at the opportunity to put a leadership credential on their resume.

It may be equally challenging to find mentees. How this is done may depend on participation criteria. If the people eligible for mentorship are in some sort of at-risk category, it may be best to make participation compulsory.

If the objective is a little more open-ended—for example, you simply want to connect as many incoming students as possible with a successful upperclassman—you can work on leading with a carrot instead of a stick.

Regardless, if you want to get people to participate at a high level, you need to heavily emphasize the program.

Progressive school-wide initiatives benefit from the systemized organization. Tap into data, and track progress. Adjust your incentives as new information comes in to maximize the impact.

Most schools will have people working within the district who have trained at the graduate level. Unsurprisingly, educators are much more likely to go to graduate school than the general public. Through master’s or E.D.D. programs, many teachers and administrators learn how to use data and tap into other technologies that might be beneficial to this process. Take advantage of every resource you have.

How Schools Can Help

Great. So mentorships are a good idea. What’s next? As mentioned at the front end of this article, mentorships often don’t happen organically. Schools can help foster them by initiating programs that pair older students with younger ones.

Bolstering programs with incentives may help to stoke participation. It’s also important to make sure the programs are accessible regardless of the student’s personal background. For example, will kids have to miss the bus to participate in an after-school mentorship program? If so, is there a safe alternative way for them to get home? Or, perhaps, a way for them to participate during school hours?

As with any school program, the idea isn’t just to create a good opportunity. It’s also to make sure as many people can participate as possible.

Quizzes and surveys are practical tools for engaging learners in online courses, enabling trainers to assess comprehension and gather valuable feedback. Many learning management systems (LMS) provide built-in features for interactive quizzes and surveys. In this article, we will explore the benefits of incorporating these assessments into your training programs and outline a step-by-step guide on creating effective quizzes and surveys within an LMS.

Why Use Interactive Quizzes and Surveys?

One LMS that offers immense quiz customization is ClearCompany. Interactive quizzes and surveys offer several advantages in the learning process. They help users retain knowledge for longer while also enhancing their overall skills.

1. Enhancing Engagement

Including interactive elements in your course content can make the learning experience more enjoyable and captivating for learners. Quizzes with immediate feedback or gamification features, such as points or badges, can boost motivation and sustain interest through friendly competition.

2. Assessing Knowledge Retention

Quizzes allow trainers to evaluate learners’ understanding of key concepts covered in the course. By measuring knowledge retention at regular intervals, trainers can identify areas where learners may be struggling or need additional support.

3. Obtaining Feedback

Surveys give participants a platform to voice their opinions about various aspects of the training program, such as course materials, instructor effectiveness, or overall satisfaction. Gathering feedback enables trainers to further refine their courses based on participant insights.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Interactive Quizzes

Follow these steps to create engaging quizzes using your LMS:

1. Identify Learning Objectives

Determine what you want learners to achieve by taking the quiz, e.g., reinforcing specific topics or assessing comprehension after completing a module.

2. Craft Well-Written Questions

Write clear questions that align with the learning objectives identified in Step 1. Ensure they are concise, unambiguous, and focused on one idea per question.

3. Choose Appropriate Question Formats

Multiple-choice questions work well for testing factual knowledge, while true/false statements help challenge misconceptions. For more complex concepts that require deeper understanding, consider using gap-fill exercises or drag-and-drop matching questions.

4. Use a Mix of Difficulty Levels

Include questions of varying difficulty to cater to learners with different knowledge levels. This way, you can challenge advanced learners while enabling beginners to reinforce foundational concepts.

5. Provide Immediate Feedback

Configure your LMS to provide instant feedback for each question. Encourage learners by explaining why an answer is correct or providing hints on incorrect choices, helping them understand the reasoning behind each question’s solution.

6. Add Visual Elements

Incorporate images, charts, or diagrams where relevant to stimulate visual learning and make the quiz more engaging and interactive.

7. Set Time Limits

If appropriate for your training program, consider implementing time limits on quizzes to simulate real-world pressures and focus learners’ attention.

8. Randomize Question Order

To minimize the risk of guessing based on location within the quiz, use your LMS’ randomization feature to present questions in a different order for each learner.

Step-by-Step Guide to Creating Interactive Surveys

Embrace these steps when creating interactive surveys within your LMS:

1. Define Survey Goals

Identify what you want to achieve with the survey—gather feedback on course effectiveness and instructor performance, or evaluate satisfaction levels—to tailor questions accordingly.

2. Keep Questions Short and Focused

Ask precise questions that respondents can answer without confusion in 1-2 sentences or with a rating scale response format.

3. Utilize Different Question Types

Use Likert-scale ratings (e.g., strongly agree/agree/disagree/strongly disagree) or sliding scale options where appropriate, in addition to open-ended questions that elicit detailed responses.

4. Ensure Anonymity (If Desired)

Assure respondents that their answers will remain confidential if anonymity is crucial for gathering honest and unbiased feedback.

5. Consider Conditional Branching (If Supported)

Some advanced LMS platforms support conditional branching—a feature that directs survey-takers to specific questions based on their previous responses. Use this tool to personalize survey experiences and obtain targeted insights.

6. Include Opportunities for Additional Comments

Leave room at the end of the survey for respondents to provide additional feedback or suggestions, allowing them to express their thoughts in more detail.

7. Test Your Survey Before Deployment

Before launching the survey to participants, carefully review the questions, sequence, and options to ensure clarity and functionality.

Conclusion

Incorporating interactive quizzes and surveys in your LMS can significantly enhance learner engagement, assess knowledge retention, and gather valuable feedback. By following our step-by-step guides when creating these quizzes and surveys, you can leverage these assessment tools effectively within your training programs. Remember to always consider your learners’ needs and goals when designing these engaging assessments.

It wasn’t Covid that created healthcare shortages. The pandemic sure didn’t help things, but the problem began years earlier. The true issue? Nurses were leaving the profession or retiring, and not enough people were coming up through the ranks to replace them.

It was—and still is—a recruitment problem. To fix the issue, schools need to find not just more students, but potential healthcare workers who have what it takes to go the distance. Right now, almost half of all new nurses leave the profession within five years. That isn’t sustainable. In this article, we take a look at what qualities guidance counselors and college recruiters should look for when seeking out new nursing school candidates.

We also take a look at ways to present the career so that it is appealing.

Identifying the Right Students

While each kid will ultimately decide for themselves if they want to go into a healthcare career, high-aptitude students will have a certain set of qualities.

  • Compassion.
  • Clear communication.
  • Educational aptitude.

Nursing is mentally strenuous, and it helps enormously to be an effective student. Still, that does not mean that schools should only approach students at the top of the class. Students with a commitment to learning, and the right set of soft skills can be great fits for the profession.

Making the Sell

Ok, so that’s how to identify someone with the potential to be a good nurse. How can colleges make the sell? There are several key benefits that might attract students to a career in nursing.

  • Higher than average pay- Nurses do not necessarily get rich, but they won’t be poor either. Their income is competitive and there are opportunities to increase it even further by pursuing specialized certifications or advanced degrees.
  • Meaningful work- While high school students may not fully understand the importance of doing work that matters to them on a personal level, it’s still a worthwhile feature of the job to emphasize. More and more people are leaving their original careers to work in fields that they find more impactful. Healthcare, education, social work. Emphasizing the importance of choosing a job that feels impactful to people at a young age may reduce instances of midlife career transitions.
  • Flexibility- This is admittedly a complicated benefit. If you ask ten working nurses about how flexible they think their job is you might well get ten very different answers. Here’s what is true: Most floor nurses work three shifts a week. In many cases, they can choose when those shifts are. The hours remain punishing, but that element of choice makes the whole situation more bearable for some people.

It is important to emphasize the hard things with the good things. The idea is to funnel in more “qualified,” candidates. We use this phrase the way marketers do: people who will not only enroll in a healthcare education but also complete it, and go on to work a long, successful career. Many people are attracted to the idea of becoming a nurse because they want to help others, or simply because they are interested in working in healthcare and this is the route that appeals to them the most.

However, when they begin their careers, they find that the pressure and emotional wear and tear are too much for them. While this is a very valid response to the pressures of healthcare work, it’s better to figure out how you will respond to difficult aspects of a job before you have spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to obtain a qualification for it.

Healthcare shadowing opportunities can help with this. High school guidance counselors or parents might consider encouraging students who are interested in healthcare careers to participate in job shadowing opportunities at the local hospital. This can be a good way to get a sense of what it is like to work in a healthcare setting, without any of the pressure or responsibility.

Emphasize the Options

It’s also not a bad idea to help high school students understand how many different career options there are in the world of healthcare. Doctors and nurses, sure. Also, administrators, technicians, home health professionals, paramedics, physical therapists.

You can even apply marketing or finance skills to the world of healthcare. There are so many different ways to help hospitals do what they need to. High school students should at least have a partial idea of what options lay ahead for them.

Rethinking Healthcare

Close your eyes and imagine a nurse. If the person you pictured in your head wasn’t a middle-aged white woman, you deserve a pat on the back. Unfortunately, the real world is not quite as diverse as your imagination.

The overwhelming majority of nurses are white females. There are two obvious problems with this:

  • Limited talent pool: White females make up only a limited segment of the population. To get more people interested in healthcare work, it is important to challenge assumptions about who can participate.
  • Deprived of Opportunity: The assumption that nursing jobs are only for white females also deprives many people of good professional opportunities. Healthcare workers enjoy competitive salaries and fulfilling work. In an ideal world, access to these types of careers would be equitable.

Patient outcomes also suffer from a lack of diversity. Studies show that minorities—particularly black women—consistently experience a higher rate of complications during routine care. One of the main issues is communication.

Healthcare workers sometimes struggle to interact productively with people who come from backgrounds radically different than their own. This has created a world in which black women have almost three times as high a maternal mortality rate than white women.

It’s only fair to say that there are multiple factors contributing to this statistic. Minorities also have less access to preventative care which can play a huge role in overall outcomes.

Still, adequate representation in nursing can help alleviate the problem while also putting more wealth in minority communities.

Universities can help with this by making sure that their recruitment materials include a wide range of different communities.

Preschool is like the first step on a long and exciting journey for your child. It’s that special time when little ones begin to explore the world around them, make friends, and learn new things. Here are ten important reasons why sending your child to preschool is a great idea. Explore a top preschool near me that offers quality early childhood education and a nurturing environment for young learners.

1. Early Social Skills Development

In preschool, kids learn shapes and colors, but they also learn how to play nice with others. They share toys, take turns, and make new friends. These social skills are essential for later years, helping them get along with classmates, teachers, and family.

2. Boosts Emotional Growth

Preschool helps children recognize their feelings and those of others. When they experience both joy and frustration, they learn how to manage their emotions. By facing challenging situations, they build resilience, which is a vital life skill.

3. Promotes Independence

Preschool is a fantastic place for kids to start doing things on their own. They learn to put on their coats, wash their hands, and even manage snack time. This newfound independence shatters the idea that they are helpless, giving them confidence to try new things.

4. Encourages Curiosity and Creativity

Preschool is a creative playground where questions are welcomed. Children explore art, music, and storytelling. They learn to express themselves and think outside the box. Isn’t it amazing how a simple crayon can ignite a child’s imagination?

5. Prepares for Kindergarten and Beyond

Sending your child to preschool lays a strong foundation for future learning. They’re introduced to basic math and literacy concepts, making the transition to kindergarten smoother. Imagine how much easier it will be when they start reading or counting!

6. Builds a Love for Learning

Preschool often incorporates play into learning, making education feel fun and exciting. When children enjoy learning at an early age, they’re likely to carry that passion with them throughout their school years. Who wouldn’t want to be excited about school?

7. Develops Fine Motor Skills

From cutting with scissors to coloring within the lines, preschool activities help improve fine motor skills. These skills are crucial for writing and daily tasks. Think of it as training wheels for their hands, preparing them for more complex actions later.

8. Fosters Communication Skills

In preschool, kids practice talking and listening every day. They engage in conversations, ask questions, and express their thoughts. This constant communication helps them develop a stronger vocabulary and better articulation.

9. Teaches Routine and Structure

Preschool days are filled with routines that teach kids what to expect. They learn about schedules, follow directions, and understand the importance of being on time. These habits often stick with them as they grow older, making them organized individuals.

10. Builds a Sense of Community

Being part of a preschool helps children feel connected to a community. They meet other kids, parents, and teachers, which can create a sense of belonging. This feeling is key to developing social confidence that lasts a lifetime.

Sending your child to preschool is like giving them a key to unlock their potential. The skills and experiences they gain will set them up for a bright future. So, if you’re wondering whether to enroll your little one, remember all the incredible benefits that await!

The Rise of Online Education

In the last ten years, online learning has dramatically changed the educational environment, giving students new opportunities to access various educational materials without leaving their houses. Thanks to the flexibility of online programs, traditional barriers, such as location and time constraints, have been significantly reduced. The change has been driven by technological progress and a growing need for flexible learning opportunities, allowing students to balance their academic, personal, and professional obligations. For those considering this path, a common question arises: how long does it take to get a bachelor’s degree online? The duration can differ significantly depending on how the program is structured and how quickly the student progresses. Many online bachelor’s degree programs are designed to be completed within three to four years, mirroring traditional timelines. However, the pacing flexibility of online education allows some students to accelerate their learning and finish sooner, while others may take additional time to tailor their studies around other commitments.

Industries with High Demand

As we look toward the future, specific industries are experiencing rapid growth, increasing the demand for skilled and educated professionals. These industries are often at the forefront of innovation and change, providing ample career opportunities for those with the right educational background. Prominent among these growth sectors are healthcare, information technology (IT), and digital marketing, each offering diverse roles that necessitate specialized knowledge and skills that can be acquired through targeted online programs.

Healthcare

The healthcare sector is expanding at an unprecedented rate due to an aging global population and continuous advancements in medical technology. The industry encompasses many roles requiring specific educational qualifications, from medical assistants to healthcare administrators. Online healthcare management, nursing, and medical coding programs are increasingly popular, providing students with the skills needed to excel in this vital industry.

Information Technology

The IT industry is known for its rapid evolution, often demanding that professionals stay current with the latest technologies and methodologies. Careers in cybersecurity, software development, and data analysis are particularly lucrative and in high demand. Online education offers numerous courses and certification programs in these fields, enabling students to gain the necessary skills to thrive in the continually changing tech environment.

Digital Marketing

As businesses pivot towards online platforms, the need for skilled digital marketers has surged. SEO, content marketing, and social media management skills are highly demanded.

Benefits of Online Degrees

An online degree offers numerous advantages that appeal to a broad spectrum of students. Its flexibility is a significant advantage, allowing students to learn at their own pace and schedule. It is perfect for those with busy lives, such as working professionals and parents. This flexibility also extends to course formats, with many programs offering asynchronous classes that allow students to access materials and complete assignments at times that suit them best.

Another key advantage of online degrees is the potential cost savings. Online programs typically offer reduced tuition fees compared to on-campus options, allowing students to cut costs on housing, transportation, and course materials. These financial benefits make higher education more accessible to a larger audience, democratizing learning opportunities.

Furthermore, online education supports the inclusion of a diverse student body. Because geographic location is no longer a barrier, students from various backgrounds can join the same program, enriching the learning experience with diverse perspectives and ideas. This increase in diversity can lead to more dynamic and comprehensive discussions and collaborative projects.

Success Tips for Online Students

  • Time Management: To succeed online, students must prioritize effective time management. Prioritize tasks and create a consistent study routine that fits your lifestyle. Divide more significant functions into smaller, achievable steps to prevent stress.
  • Stay Organized: Use tools like planners, digital calendars, and project management apps to track assignments, deadlines, and important dates. Organizing your study space can also enhance focus and productivity.
  • Seek Support: Use virtual office hours, student forums, and peer study groups. Interacting with teachers and classmates can offer significant assistance and improve your educational journey.
  • Stay Motivated: Setting short-term goals can help maintain focus and motivation. Celebrate small victories and progress milestones to keep yourself motivated throughout your coursework.

Balancing online coursework with personal and professional responsibilities can be challenging but manageable with the right strategies. Establishing a dedicated workspace and minimizing distractions can significantly improve productivity. Remember, consistency is critical to maintaining momentum throughout your studies. Creating a schedule incorporating frequent pauses and self-care practices can prevent exhaustion and assist in reaching your educational objectives.

Data and Research Supporting Online Education

A growing body of research supports the effectiveness of online education. Generally, students in online learning settings outperformed students receiving in-person instruction, but only to a small extent. This finding highlights the potential for online education to match, and in some cases exceed, the efficacy of traditional classroom settings. Online education has significantly improved access for underrepresented groups. It includes students from low-income backgrounds, working adults, and those with family obligations. The ability to attend classes online removes many barriers to education, thereby promoting greater diversity and inclusivity in higher education institutions. These studies underscore the potential of online education to provide high-quality, effective, and inclusive learning experiences. As technology advances, the tools and platforms available for online learning are likely to become even more sophisticated, further enhancing the educational experience.

Balancing Online Education and Professional Life

Balancing the demands of online education and professional responsibilities can be challenging yet achievable with the right strategies. Setting clear goals, maintaining a structured schedule, and utilizing available resources can help create a balanced approach. Using digital organization and time management tools can reduce stress and increase productivity. It is also essential to communicate with employers and family members about your educational commitments to ensure you have the support needed to succeed. As online education becomes more prevalent, understanding how to integrate its benefits into one’s life will be crucial for achieving academic and professional success. Taking advantage of the flexibility and opportunities provided by online education can lead to exploring new career options and personal development.

“Everything goes digital,” people used to say ten years ago. While many things did make the leap, the SAT took its time catching up. Only recently did students learn that instead of the traditional paper-and-pencil test, they will now be taking a digital exam to secure their place in their dream college.

Moreover, the test itself has changed! So, for many, it is now a big question: Where can you find practice questions to prepare well for test day? You’ll receive all the answers in about 5 minutes! Keep reading!

Digital SAT: What You Need to Know

Before we give you all the resources to find a full-length practice test, let’s take a moment to see what has changed with the new SAT. Firstly, the core of the test remains the same: measuring essential college and career skills, scoring on a 1600-point scale, and administering the test in schools or test centers with a proctor present.

Test centers remain accessible to all students. Free practice resources continue to be available, and support for students needing accommodations on test day is unwavering.

What about the changes? Here they are:

  • Digital Format: Students take the SAT on a tablet or laptop.
  • Shorter Test: The test will be shorter, taking around 2 hours and 14 minutes to complete, instead of 3 hours like the paper SAT.
  • Adaptive Test: The test will be adaptive. Each of the two sections will have two modules, where the difficulty of the second will be based on performance in the first.
  • Bluebook App and Calculator: Students must use the Bluebook App and are allowed to use a calculator throughout the Math section.

Overall, the College Board has made it easier for students to take the exam. However, you still need to prepare using credible sources to practice reading, writing, and math.

Digital SAT Practice Test: Where to Practice

There are many resources available online, and it can be hard to determine which are credible and which might mislead you. That’s why we’ve prepared the best, most trustworthy options:

Bluebook Practice Tests

The first resource you should always turn to is the official College Board site. The educators behind the test provide extensive materials to navigate your digital SAT practice, all for free! Here’s what they suggest:

  • Download and install the Bluebook app.
  • Take full-length practice tests regularly, especially two weeks before test day.
  • Complete the exam setup in the Bluebook app and get your admission ticket five days prior to the test.
  • Arrive on time on test day, according to the time on your ticket.

The College Board offers a full guide on the scoring system, performance breakdown, what to expect from the new format, and access to all units.

College Board’s Question Bank

College Board also offers another option for free practice tests. It is definitely less popular, but it isn’t less effective. We’re talking about the Educator Question Bank. There, you can find tons of free questions by simply specifying your assignment (SAT), picking the test (Reading and Writing or Math), and choosing one of the domain scores.

Source: Educator Question Bank

Khan Academy

If College Board is your first choice, then Khan Academy should be your second. College Board partnered with Khan Academy in 2015 to provide a convenient study platform. Writing, Reading, Math, standard English conventions, and explanations for the modules are all available on the platform for free.

Online Practice Tools

Diversifying your practice sources can give you a broader perspective and expose you to varied types of questions. Look for reputable platforms offering digital SAT practice tests and resources. Many of these platforms provide detailed answer explanations, performance analytics, AI tools, and tailored study plans to help you hone your skills.

If you want to get the best score on your exam, try to take as many digital SAT practice tests as you can. Analyze each of them, note your strengths and weaknesses, and try to work on them every time you practice.

Note: If you are preparing for the Digital SAT, avoid using paper SAT prep materials. They can be confusing, as there are many parts of the paper test that are redundant for the digital SAT. The writing section is longer, the reading section has more passages, and the overall format differs. Use practice tests specifically designed for the digital SAT.

Personal Tutoring

While it is not a platform, we still recommend going through digital SAT practice tests with a tutor. This can better prepare you for test day, as you’ll receive extensive answer explanations and more personalized insights. It isn’t an option for everyone, but if you feel like you want a more tailored approach, give it a try.

Flashcards

If you are more of a visual learner, flashcards can be one of your go-to study tactics. Despite what many believe, memorizing vocabulary isn’t the only way to use flashcards. They can also help you with practice questions, often organized by themes. You can make your own flashcards and tailor them to your preference by adding images, examples, etc.

Bonus: Study Tips to Maximize Your Score

There are many tips and tactics to increase your chances of scoring higher and securing your place among high-achieving students. While simply going through practice questions is essential, there are other things to consider:

Find Out Your Learning Style

Everyone learns differently. Discovering your learning style can significantly boost your study efficiency. Are you a visual learner who benefits from diagrams and videos? Or perhaps an auditory learner who retains information better through listening? Maybe you’re a kinesthetic learner who needs hands-on practice to grasp concepts. Once you know your learning style, tailor your study methods accordingly to make your prep more effective and enjoyable.

Apart from that, ensure your time management is on point. If you’re using the Bluebook app for your practice, you will have the time tracked for you. In other cases, you can simply use a smartwatch to time yourself.

Don’t Cram

Cramming might seem like a quick fix, but it’s not a sustainable strategy for mastering the SAT. Instead, spread out your study sessions over weeks or even months. This approach, known as spaced repetition, helps reinforce knowledge and improves long-term retention. A well-paced study schedule reduces stress and ensures you’re thoroughly prepared. Avoid procrastination, as cramming is often a result of postponing study plans.

Review Mistakes Thoroughly

Engage in “deliberate learning.” It’s not just about practicing; it’s about learning from your mistakes. Whether you’re using online resources or studying with a tutor, make sure to thoroughly review any errors after completing your practice tests. Understand why you got a question wrong and learn the correct method to solve it. This helps prevent similar mistakes in the future.

Conclusion

The more familiar you are with the computer-based version of the SAT, the easier it will be to get the right answers and tackle harder modules. Digital SAT prep requires time and energy, so take tests without overwhelming yourself. Consistent practice, coupled with the right resources, will build your confidence and enhance your performance. Remember, it’s not just about hard work; it’s about smart work. Stay focused, pace yourself, and good luck!

There are literally billions of social media accounts in circulation. You have one. Probably, you have several. Your children do too. Most kids do. It can seem Harmless, especially filtered through your own experiences. You use your social media to keep up with people you went to high school with—better that than seeing them in person—and maybe to keep tabs on what is going on around your neighborhood.

If your child wants to stay in the loop about noisy neighbors and the occasional car break-in, why get in their way?

Of course, we all know the stakes are higher than that. Social media usage in teenagers is strongly linked to depression, anxiety, and even addiction. What can parents do to help their children safely navigate the digital world?

In this article, we take a look at what risks social media poses for children, and how you can set boundaries that will keep your kids safe.

What are the Risks of Inappropriate Social Media Usage?

Where even to begin? Social media is very strongly associated with cyberbullying. Virtually every school-aged child experiences it in some form—either as a victim, a perpetrator, or a witness. What’s more, cyberbullying has been shown to have a very serious impact on mental and emotional health. Victims are twice as likely to have thoughts of suicide compared to the general population.

Social media also has the potential for addiction. Grownups and children alike can easily grow overly attached to scrolling, to the point that they experience anxiety or sleeplessness when they cannot be on their phones.

Social media use is strongly associated with other forms of depression and anxiety as well. The FOMO effect is very real. Children see their friends getting together online. They wonder why they weren’t invited. They see vacations and social experiences. They make unflattering comparisons between themselves and their classmates.

There is also the risk of personal information being circulated more widely than was intended. Data breaches. Poorly thought-out posts. The potential, in other words, for a young person to get themselves into real trouble with what they say online.

While these social media side effects do not immediately take hold of anyone who makes a Facebook account, they are real and common risks that parents should be on the lookout for.

Does Social Media have Positives?

There’s entertainment value, sure. But does social media do anything at all to contribute to the sustainable health and wellness of the people who use it? The data on this point is not completely clear. Small amounts of social media do produce a dopamine response in the brain. This chemical can help reduce stress in the person who is experiencing it.

However, it is also an experience of diminishing returns. The more a person leans on social media for stress relief, the less effective it becomes. This is the same basic set of circumstances that can contribute to any number of addictive tendencies.

Social media does allow people to stay connected in ways that wouldn’t have otherwise been possible. This could be considered a benefit—particularly for a child who has online friends, or friends who live in physically remote locations.

Social media can also be used as an outlet for self-expression. There are, of course, perils to this, as there is always the risk that the child will over-express, or communicate feelings in ways that are inappropriate.

Still, assuming that social media is used as an appropriate outlet for emotions, it can be a good way for children to explain themselves to the world, or even call attention to causes that are important to them.

The way in which social media gives people who would not otherwise have it a considerable voice should not be discounted. Many teenagers have used social media as a vehicle for calling attention to causes they are passionate about. Climate and gun safety advocates have brought their message to a global audience thanks in large part to their social media presence.

So yes. When things go well and social media is used appropriately, it can be a positive influence on a young person’s life. However, it is up to the parents to set boundaries and expectations.

Clearly Explain Your Position

No one responds well to the “because I said so,” rationale. Try it with a teenager and you are only inviting rebellion. Fortunately, it is a very unnecessary tactic. Kids are logical. If you explain the risk factors and illustrate your concerns effectively, you will immediately strengthen your position and increase the chances of compliance.

Increasing the chances of compliance may sound like an unappealing objective. They are your kids. They are supposed to listen. Yeah, right.

Social media is extremely easy to access. The best parental controls in the world won’t keep a child from getting online if they are determined to do so—not when every kid has a cell phone and a school-issued tablet.

Layout your opinions clearly. Support them with facts. Your child may not be immediately swayed but they will respond better than if you had simply insisted based on the strength of your position as their parent.

Set Clear Boundaries

Once you have laid out your case, it’s time to set boundaries. What are your expectations for their social media use? Make these guidelines both clear and enforceable. You may feel like a prudish parent telling your kid that they can only look at their social media accounts while you are in the room, or that they can only have X amount of screen time per day, but if that is your comfort level, it is important to stick to it.

Enforce Your Position

Assign consequences for violations of your policy. For example, if your child cannot use social media under the conditions you establish, you may consider banning it completely. Make sure that any consequences you implement are laid out clearly before any violation of your expectations takes place.

Why? This will further establish your expectations, and give your child a fair chance at complying with your conditions. Remember: this process will go more smoothly with everyone on the same page. Make yourself as clear and open as possible, and the odds that your child will listen increase substantially.

With effective communication, it is possible to help your child have a safe, ethical online experience.

In today’s globalized world, the importance of integrating cultural awareness in education cannot be overstated. Educational institutions are becoming increasingly diverse, and with this diversity comes the need for a deeper understanding and respect for different cultures. Cultivating cultural awareness within schools not only enriches learning but also prepares students to thrive in a multicultural society. This article explores practical steps and strategies to weave cultural understanding into the fabric of educational systems, benefiting both students and educators.

Understanding Cultural Awareness

Cultural awareness in education refers to the recognition and appreciation of different cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives within a learning environment. It involves understanding the social norms, values, and traditions of various cultural groups and using this knowledge to foster an inclusive atmosphere in schools.

The impact of cultural competence extends beyond the classroom; it plays a critical role in the social and emotional development of students. When students see their cultures represented in their education, they feel valued and understood, which can significantly enhance their engagement and academic success. Moreover, exposure to diverse cultures promotes empathy and social skills among students, preparing them to navigate and succeed in a diverse world.

Teacher Training and Professional Development

For cultural awareness to be effectively integrated into the educational system, teachers themselves must be well-versed and comfortable with cultural issues. This begins with comprehensive training and professional development opportunities focused on cultural competence. Educators should have access to workshops and seminars that teach cultural sensitivity and provide strategies for handling cultural differences constructively within the classroom.

Schools might also consider partnering with local cultural organizations or sociologists who can offer expert insights and training. These professionals can help teachers understand the broader social contexts that influence their students’ behaviors and attitudes.

Pursuing a bachelor degree in sociology could be instrumental in gaining an in-depth understanding of cultural dynamics. This academic background equips teachers with the theoretical and practical tools necessary to approach education with a culturally informed perspective, ensuring that they can meet the diverse needs of their students effectively.

Ongoing professional development in this area is crucial, as it ensures that teachers remain aware of new cultural trends and demographic changes within their communities.

Curriculum Development

Integrating cultural awareness into the curriculum is a vital step toward creating an educational experience that respects and celebrates diversity. Schools can start by incorporating studies of different cultural histories, languages, and traditions directly into their syllabi. This can be achieved through literature and social studies classes that explore a wide array of cultural narratives and contributions.

Additionally, interdisciplinary teaching that combines sociology, history, and literature can provide students with a comprehensive view of how cultures intersect and influence one another. For example, a unit on American history could be enriched with lessons on the contributions of Native American tribes, the influences of African American culture, and the roles of various immigrant groups throughout the centuries. This approach not only broadens students’ knowledge but also helps dismantle cultural stereotypes by presenting a more inclusive and nuanced view of history.

Student Engagement and Activities

An essential aspect of cultivating cultural awareness involves engaging students directly through interactive and inclusive activities. Schools can organize cultural days or heritage months where students and staff celebrate and learn about different cultures through music, dance, art, and food. Such events allow students to express their own cultural identities and experience the richness of their peers’ backgrounds, promoting a deeper mutual respect and understanding.

Exchange programs, both local and international, serve as another excellent way for students to gain an understanding of cultural norms that textbooks alone cannot provide. By interacting with peers from diverse backgrounds, students develop interpersonal skills that are essential in today’s global society.

Schools can also encourage the formation of clubs and organizations that focus on cultural diversity. These groups can undertake projects that explore various cultures, organize talks by guest speakers from different ethnic backgrounds, and create platforms for students to share their cultural experiences. Student-led initiatives are particularly powerful as they give young people the autonomy to shape their understanding and appreciation of diversity, making the learning process more personal and impactful.

Assessing Impact and Making Adjustments

To ensure that efforts to integrate cultural awareness are effective, schools must implement strategies to assess the impact of these programs. This could involve surveys or focus groups with students, teachers, and parents to gather feedback on the inclusivity of the curriculum and the effectiveness of cultural activities. Assessing attitudes and behaviors towards cultural diversity before and after specific interventions can also provide valuable insights into their impact.

Feedback mechanisms should be established to allow students and teachers to voice their opinions on what is working and what could be improved. This ongoing dialogue helps educational institutions to remain responsive to the needs of their community and to make necessary adjustments to their approaches.

For instance, if students report feeling that certain cultures are not adequately represented, schools can take steps to address these gaps in the curriculum or in extracurricular activities. Similarly, if certain activities are found to be particularly effective in promoting cultural understanding, schools might consider expanding these programs or integrating them more fully into the everyday curriculum.

Conclusion

Integrating cultural awareness in education is not just about adding more content to the curriculum; it’s about creating a dynamic, responsive, and inclusive educational environment that values and leverages diversity as a powerful educational tool. The strategies outlined—from developing a culturally inclusive curriculum to engaging students in meaningful activities, and continuously assessing and refining educational practices—form a comprehensive approach to cultural integration.

Schools, particularly those in culturally diverse communities or those seeking to become more inclusive, are encouraged to adopt these strategies to foster an environment where every student has the opportunity to learn from and with each other. By doing so, they can transform educational settings into places where cultural diversity is celebrated as an essential and enriching part of the learning experience. This commitment to cultural awareness and sensitivity is crucial for developing a generation of learners equipped to engage and thrive in a multicultural world.

As summer vacation season draws near, a notable trend emerges among children — the “summer slump.” Spanning three months, the “summer slump” period decreases reading and learning habits among students and presents a big challenge to academic development.

According to the National Summer Learning Association, students can lose up to 20% of their academic gains from the previous school year during the summer break. Despite this data and the recognized importance of summer learning, students continue to fall behind in literacy skills when reassessed at the start of the new school year.

Parental involvement remains crucial in mitigating the effects of the summer slump. Research from Scholastic indicates that only 17% of parents believe their children spend adequate time reading during the summer. By fostering a culture of continuous learning year-round, families and communities can strive to counteract the detrimental effects of the summer slump and promote equitable access to educational opportunities for all children, regardless of the season.

To combat the summer slump, here are some tips:

  1. Set aside dedicated reading time each day: Designate a specific time each day for reading — whether it’s in the morning after breakfast, at night before bedtime, or anywhere in between.
  2. Visit the local library and discover summer programs: Many libraries offer summer reading programs tailored to different age groups. These programs often include incentives such as prizes or certificates for reaching reading goals. Additionally, libraries host storytelling sessions, book clubs, or other events that make reading fun and interactive.
  3. Explore online resources for interactive learning activities: There are numerous educational apps that offer interactive learning activities across various subjects, from math and science to language arts and coding. Online reading resources have the added benefit of bringing the most current publications to young readers. Explore platforms like The Juice and NYT for Kids over the summer.
  4. Encourage participation in educational camps or workshops: Look for summer camps or workshops that focus on topics your child enjoys or wants to explore further. These programs can provide hands-on learning experiences, foster creativity, and allow children to socialize with peers who share similar interests.
  5. Incorporate educational games or challenges into daily routines: Turn learning into a game by incorporating educational challenges or puzzles into everyday activities. For example, you could create a scavenger hunt based on nature facts or challenge your child to solve math problems while cooking together in the kitchen.
  6. Book Club: Start a family book club where everyone reads the same book and discusses it together.
  7. Reading Nook: Set up a cozy and inviting reading nook with comfortable seating and good lighting.
  8. Story Time: Have daily or weekly story time where you read aloud to your kids.
  9. Themed Reading: Choose books based on a theme, like space, animals, or fairy tales, to make reading more exciting.
  10. Book Swaps: Organize a book swap with friends or neighbors to exchange books and discover new ones.
  11. Interactive Books: Look for interactive books with flaps, pop-ups, or activities to keep younger kids engaged.
  12. Audiobooks: Use audiobooks for road trips or quiet time. They’re a great way to enjoy stories together.
  13. Read and Explore: Pair reading with activities, like reading a book about nature and then going on a nature hike.
  14. Reading Rewards: Create a reading rewards chart where kids can earn stickers or small prizes for each book they read.
  15. Book-Themed Crafts: Do crafts related to the books your kids are reading to enhance their understanding and enjoyment.
  16. Story Writing: Encourage your kids to write their own stories or create a comic book.
  17. Reading Picnic: Have a reading picnic at a park where everyone brings their favorite book.
  18. Guest Readers: Invite friends, family, or even local authors to read to your kids.
