There are a lot of options out there for hunting apps. All of them have their pros and cons, but I want to tell you about my experience with HuntWise. After all, when it comes to spending your money, it is your money that does the talking. I personally have been spending my money locally rather than through the Amazons and Walmarts of the world.

Spending your money at places that have good people working there and their overall agenda is similar to my own. I don’t want to spend my money where people don’t care about their customers and are only in it to make the all mighty dollar. Now don’t get me wrong, all businesses are in buisiness because they make money, but you shouldn’t have to ignore your customers, nor should you find ways to pad the scales or misrepresent a product, and certainly you shouldn’t be offering free merchandise without actually planning on giving that free item away, right?

Okay, so back to my story. I get an email from HuntWise, probably an ad campaign, and I see that they are giving away a free hat for subscribing to their PRO or ELITE plans. It says you have to get it before 10/23 to be eligible. In fact, here is the ad…

Now, wouldn’t you think you could get a hat? Well it isn’t so simple. My opinion is, they only plan on giving it to a few. Perhaps you have to purchase the yearly subscription to get it (over $100.00) I’m not sure because I didn’t get my hat.

So I assumed (and this is where we see who they really are) if I contact them and ask them about it, that they would make things right. The first guy I got told me that at the end of the month they would collect your information and send out the hats.

Well, the month ended and it’s half way through the next, so I contact them. They said you have to follow the link in order to get a hat. Did you see that anywhere? Because I missed it if it is there. Maybe it’s in the fine print. You know, the stuff you can’t read because they don’t want you too know it’s in there? And If I had a company and someone contacted me about it, I would look to see if they did indeed subscribe, and if so, send them what I promised, but not these guys. They told me,

The rest of the email said that you needed to use the link provided to qualify for the hat. If you did not use that link, you did not follow the directions provided.

Yeah, have a great day. I know when I am being brushed off. So maybe I’m wrong, … Let me go back and read every word in the email… Well, I have read the email several times. There is no where in the email that says you have to use the link in order to qualify. Perhaps they meant to put it in the email, but the fact is, it isn’t there. In my opinion, they should refund my money, or give me a hat. They are content to do neither. And this is who you are supporting if you give them your money. So this is why You Shouldn’t Spend Your Money On HuntWise.

If you want to give your money and support the guys who would rather pull wool over your eyes, then that is your choice, but for me, I want to know who I’m giving my money to so I am not promoting people who have interests in things I do not. When you spend your money here, its like voting for someone who wants to take your guns away.

Okay, I’m not going to keep going over this. Just be aware. Like I said in the beginning of the article, there are plenty of places that have apps for hunting deer. I for one will never get their app again. It is my opinion that You Shouldn’t Spend Your Money On HuntWise.

In the end, after several emails, I finally got the answer I deserved. In my opinion, it was too little, too late. And if I hadn’t complained over and over, they never would have said they would send me the hat, But even though they said they would send it, I declined receiving it. I won’t use their product and I cannot accept their product with a clear conscience (even though I’m entitled to it)

I also want to add, their app isn’t bad. It is an average hunting app. I can use Weather Underground and do the same thing, and guess what? It’s free… You live and you learn…

It comes with an instruction manual, batteries, a power supply ( in case you want to plug it into the wall), and all of the hardware you need to install it onto your coop. My first install was on one of those cattle-panel hoop coops. Thus, I had to make a wooden frame to mount it to. Below is the video about my install, programming, and final thoughts concerning the product. I hope you watch it and like it.

In case you didn’t watch the video, I’ll go over the highlights here. At first I wasn’t sure I would like it. It opened different and was made of plastic. However, the product won me over when I realized I had a lot more control over how and when it opens. My old door could be programmed, but you had to use their app and that is a bit inconvenient. With the Chickcozy Automatic Chicken Door, I just push a few buttons and it’s done. Also, the safety switch is very light. If you have a young chicken, it still will not hurt them if they are in the way of the door closing. I have very young chicks in with my hens and I don’t have any issues or concerns.

The installation was a breeze, even with the framing I had to do to install it. If you have a wooden coop, all you have to do is make sure it has the proper sized opening and screw the door to your coop. Next, either put the batteries in, or plug it in to a wall outlet (your choice). That’s it. I monitored the opening and closing and although it comes pre-programmed from the factory, I still had to adjust the light intensity that triggers it. I wanted it to open earlier in the morning, so I had to lower the number for the opening of the door. If you want to learn how to do that, just watch the video above.

When you first wake up your screen, it will show you the next mode of operation, and the percentage of battery life you have left (another great feature). It has 3 modes: Manual, Time, and Light. The light mode is what it will be set at from the factory. In the light menu it tells you what the light sensor is reading right now. That is awesome because it helps you determine what to set the opening and closing numbers at. Just remember that once the number reaches your setting, it still won’t open for 20 minutes from that time. You can also add more minutes to that if you want, but it has a 20-minute delay at the very least to keep it from being triggered by a flashlight or a perimeter motion sensor light, or anything else. In Time mode, you set the time and it has then an internal clock that keeps track of the time. It doesn’t calculate daytime savings time, so you will have to reprogram the time when necessary if you live in that area of the U.S. Next, you will have to tell it what time you want it to open and close. The Factory settings are at 6:30 am it will open and 7:00 pm it closes, but you can change it to whatever you want. Then there is the Manual mode. Pretty self-explanatory. You just push the OK button when you want to open or close the door.

Final thoughts? Well, I have only tried the two Automatic Chicken Doors, but so far, I’m sold on the Chickcozy Door. It’s easy to program and you can tweak it to open exactly when you want it to open. For me, that is what I need. And with that, comes peace of mind that they are safe and secure. So, here on the farm, you use what you have. You don’t go to the store and buy brand new stuff until you have to. Instead, you use materials that are lying around, or leftovers from old projects. This was my mind-set when my chicken tractor began. I wanted a chicken tractor that would last and not fall apart while being moved around.. Long story short, … my chicken tractor is heavy. Much heavier than the traditional Chicken Tractor. And I wasn’t intending to put my ChickLift to the test, but here we are. I do not have a Joel Salatin, nor a John Suscovich style chicken tractor, but I am sure that this ChickLift would work very well for either one. My Chicken Tractors are a pretty unique style Chicken Tractor, and heavier than normal Chicken Tractors. My lighter tractor is much easier for me to maneuver. I can raise it by just stepping on it and I can pull it without any machinery. After having these Tractors, I can’t imagine ever wanting to have a stationary coop. Sure, I have to move it, but I never have to clean anything. Moving even the heavy coop only takes about 5 minutes and that is only because I use my tractor and I have to go to the barn and get it started and to the job site; hook up the coop, drag it, and put the tractor away. With the light coop, it’s 1-2 minutes and done. I suppose you could say that I spend as much time a year moving the Tractors as someone else does in cleaning their coop, and you are probably right. However, my chickens are on fresh grass every day, and I don’t have to breathe the dust to clean out the coop. I also do not have the expense of bedding for them. For me, it is a good fit.

I had an issue with my feeder. Nothing that you might expect, so bear with me. The instructions tell you that your chickens won’t instinctively know that there is food inside. You have to teach them to use it. There are two tiers of holes in the side. The first week you use the top holes so that the door stays open and your chickens can see the feed. And as you might have guessed, they’re very inquisitive. So now your chickens know where the food is. On the second week, you use the second tier of holes. Now the motion of the lid moves about half the distance. Then on week three, you don’t use any of the holes and the full motion is made to open the door. Now we get to the issue I had. You see, chickens are normally fearful of things that are moving around them, and that’s a good thing. That’s how they stay alive. However, now I just want them to eat. Well, once I got to week three, they wouldn’t eat. Just as soon as the lid would start to rise, they took off. So, I contacted Grandpa’s Feeders, and someone in their staff told me to do week one again and then week two. I really didn’t want to start over. That’s when they suggested putting a counterweight on it. I liked that idea. I decided to go through week two again (using the bottom holes). I duct taped a piece of metal on the step. After one week, I wasn’t using any of the holes, but I left the weight on it for an additional week. After that I removed the weight and now, as you can see, they use it without a problem. It’s just a small inconvenience to teach them to use it, but so worth it! Now I don’t have to worry about birds, mice, or rats eating any of their feed. Below is a video or them using it:

Other than my hens taking a couple of extra weeks to get used to the feeder, I have had no problems. And just because I had that problem doesn’t mean you will. As you can see, they have no problem using it now. The containers are made of sturdy metal. I have both the Standard Size and the Large Size, and both of them are solid. There are no parts that I would consider to be flimsy. I only weigh 160 pounds, but I can sit on them with no problem. Since I have both feeders, I just take a bag of feed at a time and dump it in. That makes it easier and faster for me. And like I have stated before, I’m not feeding all of the birds and rodents in the area. The feeders also have a screen inside to keep them from scratching or pecking feed out onto the ground. I also want to include this piece of information; Avian Flu is out there. Do you know where it comes from? Wild Birds, so if they are finding feed on the ground or are able to get into the feeders, they will. This increases your odds of one of your birds (or the whole flock) contracting it. As if the rodents weren’t bad enough. Anyways, if they aren’t habitually visiting your flock, there is a less  likelihood that you will have an issue with it. Just one more reason I like this feeder…

If you have Chickens, you are going to have to feed them. Now, you can just throw their feed on the ground and your chickens will eat. You can also use a bowl or a gravity feeder, but you will also be feeding and attracting mice, wild birds, rats, raccoons, bears, opossums, and no telling what else. Usually it is the rodents that will eat a lot of your feed. Like all animals, if it is an easy meal, they will remember it and return over and over and possibly bring their friends with them.
